Groudon, what a Pokemon. Projected to be the best Ground type attacker since its release, Groudon is a must have in your team. Don’t hesitate to get premium passes for it, it’ll improve your team. Even with the likes of Garchomp and Rhyperior, Groudon still reigns as the king of the hill. Note that this applies to pure Ground attackers,including non-Ground moves it is overtaken by Garchomp.
Even so, Groudon is still a monster and if you get one with a good IV, power it up immediately. Groudon has 270 attack, 228 defence and 207 stamina, and a maximum CP of 4115 which is the same as Kyogre. While its moveset could be better, they only fail to give it a huge lead over its rivals. Other than that, it’s still one of the best. Being pure Ground gives it few weaknesses, nothing fantastic but not terrible either. Ground is a pretty good type to attack with, able to hit the likes of Fire, Rock,Electric and Steel for supereffective damage. All of these types are popular in the current meta , the last one especially after Beldum Day making Metagross a staple in gyms.
|Resists||Weak To||Normal Damage|
3 weaknesses, 3 resistances. Grass, Water and Ice will be your best friends against Groudon. Just note that Groudon has extra resistance against Electric because in the core games its normally immune to it.
Mud Shot may get STAB but in terms of neutral damage, Dragon Tail is the better of the two moves. However if you intend to use Groudon for its Ground moves, then you have no choice but to stick with Mud Shot. Plus it’ll outdo Dragon Tail when facing off against Pokemon weak to Ground. Unless it is also weak to Dragon moves, then Dragon Tail comes out tops again.
Earthquake hands down is the best move available to Groudon here, and pair it with Mud Shot to create one lethal Ground attacker. Solarbeam has some utility, mostly due to the relatively weak field of Grass types. You can even use a Solarbeam Groudon to do Groudon raids if you have nothing else to use. Avoid Fire Blast. One interesting fact here is that all of Groudon’s charge moves benefit from the same weather condition.
Assembling The Team
Water, Ice and Grass. That’s what you should focus on. The one thing you need to be careful of is Groudon using Fire Blast and Solarbeam against your Pokemon. The former will devestate your Ice and Grass, while the latter will destroy your Water types. Earthquake is actually resisted by Grass types so it’s got that going for it. Send one legendary to fight another! Kyogre’s a beast and will perform extremely well unless Groudon fires a Solarbeam at it. It could probably tank one unboosted hit before going down. That’s not an insult to Kyogre, that’s probably better than most Water types out there.
Go with Waterfall and Hydro Pump. Blizzard can be an alternative to Hydro Pump but you won’t get as much damage out of it compared to the latter. Don’t use Thunder, it won’t work well.
I was actually surprised to see Feraligatr do so well but that’s because of the Community Day event. Hydro Cannon has elevated it to one of the top Water type attackers in the game and if you don’t have enough Kyogres to use, then consider Feraligatr. Like with Kyogre, you have to be careful to avoid Groudons with Solarbeam. Feraligatr will likely be dead or near dead after one Solarbeam.
Feraligatr has two possible movesets you can use for this particular raid. Hydro Cannon must be its charge move but for fast move you can go with either Water Gun or Waterfall. The former is better than the latter but either one is fine if you don’t want to use a TM. Don’t use Bite or Crunch, there are no benefits to that.
3: Alolan Exeggutor
Defensively, Alolan Exeggutor has one of the best typings to handle Groudon. It isn’t weak to any of its moves, in fact it resists all of them except Fire Blast. That one it takes neutral damage because its Dragon typing cancels out the weakness from its Grass type. It double resists Solarbeam and singly resists the Ground moves.
It also has good enough attack to handle Groudon. Go with Bullet Seed and Solarbeam as your moves of choice.
Venusaur, like Feraligatr needs to be used with its Community Day move to be the best it can be. If you don’t have one with Frenzy Plant then use someone else. If you do have one with Frenzy Plant, then use it. Just make sure Groudon doesn’t know Fire Blast. Everything else is fine.
For its fast move, pair Frenzy Plant with Vine Whip. That ought to do the most damage.
Groudon , like Kyogre is a must have in your team. Go for it, get a good IV Groudon and power it up for future raid bosses and gym defenders to fear. Plus its Shiny version looks really neat, neon yellow and all.
